Product description

This GIA certified ruby presents as a transparent, cushion shaped gemstone weighing 1.02 carats, with exact dimensions of 5.81 by 5.20 by 3.08 millimeters. The stone is faceted in a mixed brilliant cut, combining pavilion brilliant facets with a modified crown arrangement to balance color saturation and light return. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, and the piece displays vivid color intensity with a pinkish red hue. The polish has been graded excellent, and the ruby is natural with no enhancement recorded on the laboratory report. The provenance of this ruby is Mozambique, and the description and certification are provided by The Natural Ruby Company.

The mixed brilliant cutting style of this cushion ruby has been executed to enhance both scintillation and overall color depth. The brilliant facet patterns contribute to lively flashes of light as the stone is moved, while the slightly modified crown geometry supports even color distribution across the table. Because the material is transparent and very slightly included at eye level, light transmission through the body of the gem is strong, producing an internal glow rather than a surface only shine. The excellent polish maximizes the stone surface reflectivity, giving the ruby a clean vitreous lustre that reads evenly under both natural and artificial lighting. The pinkish red tone in this example is vivid without appearing overly dark, which permits appreciable light return from the pavilion facets while maintaining strong color saturation in the face up view.

When compared with other gemstones in its category, the optical behavior of this corundum ruby is distinct and quantifiable. Corundum has a refractive index typically around 1.76 to 1.77, which is higher than many common gem materials such as spinel, which sits nearer to 1.71, and most garnets, which vary but often fall below corundum in practical light return. This relatively high refractive index results in stronger internal reflections and more pronounced scintillation for a well cut stone, when compared to materials with lower refractive indices. Dispersion, which governs the splitting of white light into spectral color or fire, is modest in corundum at about 0.018, lower than diamond which is about 0.044. The result is that this ruby will not display the same degree of colorful fire as a diamond, but it will present more of a saturated, velvety glow where color and contrast dominate the visual appeal. Compared to other rubies, for example stones from Burma or Sri Lanka, Mozambican rubies often exhibit comparable or greater saturation at sizes that are more commonly available, and this example shows vivid intensity with a pinkish undertone that differentiates it from warmer orange red or deeper purplish red varieties. Against pink sapphires, which are the same species but with lighter saturation, this ruby returns light with greater contrast and depth because of its higher color saturation, while against spinel of similar shade, the corundum will generally appear brighter and more lively due to its higher refractive index and the cut proportions that have been tailored to corundum optical constants. The presence of very slight inclusions means that light scattering is minimal, preserving directional reflections and ensuring that facet contrast contributes to the perceived brilliance rather than causing a washed out appearance.

The combination of certified origin, lack of enhancement, and careful cutting and finishing make this Mozambique ruby a technically strong choice for settings intended to showcase natural color and optical performance. The natural corundum hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale ensures that the stone will retain its polish and reflective quality with normal wear, provided standard precautions are observed during activities that could expose the gem to strong impact. The GIA report provides independent verification of weight, dimensions, clarity grade, color description, and absence of treatment, supporting accurate appraisal and long term confidence in the piece. At The Natural Ruby Company we document these specifics so that designers and clients can match the material to appropriate mounting and lighting environments, favoring settings that allow the table and crown facets to interact with ambient light and that protect the pavilion. Professional cleaning in warm soapy water and a soft brush will preserve the excellent polish and maintain optimal light return.
