Product description

This gemstone began as a dense, translucent corundum crystal recovered from an alluvial pocket in the Mogok region of Burma, Myanmar, where crystalline rubies form under precise pressure and temperature regimes. In the wash of the stream the rough displayed a concentrated purplish red saturation and a compact crystalline habit, prompting initial planning to preserve color and weight. The rough was mapped under immersion and polarized light to locate internal silk and rutile needle orientations, then marked for an oval outline that would maximize yield while minimizing the risk of windowing. Rough orientation is critical for Burmese material, because the typical pleochroic axes can shift perceived tone depending on cutting axis, so the cutter selected an orientation that aligns the dominant color plane with the table facet, ensuring consistent face up color in mounted jewelry.

The preform was shaped to the finished dimensions of 9.29 by 5.20 by 2.82 millimeters, and precision faceting followed to produce an elegant oval outline weighing 1.38 carats. The cutter executed a mixed brilliant faceting scheme, combining a modified brilliant crown with a step influenced pavilion, to balance return of light with optimal color saturation. Crown angles were calibrated to prevent excessive leakage of red hues into the pavilion, while pavilion facets were cut to retain light within the high refractive index matrix of corundum, approximately 1.76 to 1.77, producing strong internal reflections. The table proportion and pavilion depth were tuned to reduce windowing and to increase the apparent color strength, yielding a vivid purplish red face up appearance. Girdle control was precise, maintaining a thin to slightly thick girdle to allow secure setting without sacrificing durability. The gem is transparent, with clarity graded as slightly included at eye level, where fine silk and a few pinpoint inclusions are visible but do not compromise brilliance. The polish has been finished to an excellent grade, producing crisp facet junctions and a smooth, mirror like pavilion finish that enhances light return.

After cutting the ruby underwent a standard and fully disclosed heat treatment to improve clarity and to stabilize the purplish red tone. Heating is a controlled thermal process used widely in the trade to dissolve thin veil silks and to intensify chromium related chromophores, producing a more vivid color intensity while preserving the stone's natural character. The result is a transparent ruby with vibrant saturation and evenly distributed color, rather than localized color concentrations. Optically the stone displays the classic corundum behavior, with strong pleochroism that is well managed by the chosen orientation, and with fluorescence under long wave UV that typically enhances red tones in Burmese material. The combination of mixed brilliant faceting and thermal enhancement produces a gem that reads vivid under a variety of lighting conditions, from incandescent warmth to balanced daylight, while the excellent polish and careful facet alignment maximize scintillation and depth.

At The Natural Ruby Company we document each step of this ruby's journey from mine to market, preserving provenance information and disclosing enhancement history. After cutting and treatment the ruby received a meticulous final inspection, measurements and weight verification, and imaging under controlled lighting to illustrate color and inclusions for discerning buyers. This stone is offered loose for custom mounting, and it responds exceptionally well to warm metal environments, where yellow gold or rose gold settings will deepen the purplish red tone, while platinum or white gold settings can provide a modern contrast that emphasizes brilliance. For practical wear we recommend secure claw or bezel settings that protect the thin edges while allowing the table to present color unobstructed. The Natural Ruby Company stands behind the craftsmanship, offering detailed notes on dimensions, mixed brilliant faceting, clarity grade slightly included at eye level, vivid color intensity, excellent polish, and the disclosed heat treatment, enabling collectors and designers to make informed decisions based on technical merit and documented origin.
