Product description

This round 1.81 carat ruby from Mozambique combines precise cutting proportions with a vivid color presentation, making it a technically compelling center stone for custom work offered by The Natural Ruby Company. The stone measures approximately 6.90 by 6.93 by 4.47 mm, yielding a depth of about 64.6 percent, a proportion that supports strong face up color saturation while maintaining lively light return. The mixed brilliant cut integrates a brilliant crown with a more pavilion oriented faceting scheme, a combination chosen to balance scintillation and color concentration in ruby material that exhibits high saturation. The gem is transparent with vivid red intensity, and evaluated as slightly included at eye level, a clarity grade that allows the color and light performance to dominate the visual experience. Polish is excellent, resulting in crisp facet junctions and minimal surface texture, and the piece has been heat treated, a stable and commonly accepted enhancement that improves color uniformity and reduces the visual impact of fine silk and internal growth features.

From a craftsmanship perspective the mixed brilliant faceting deserves particular attention, because the cutter has optimized crown angles and pavilion facet orientation to manage contrast and windowing in a saturated red material. The crown facets are shaped to produce broad flashes and crown reflections, while the pavilion facets are cut to maintain depth of tone when viewed face up, an intentional trade off that preserves the ruby character rather than maximizing single facet brilliance as one would for colorless stones. The slightly included clarity grade at eye level suggests the presence of small crystals or faint silk, inclusions that are typical in Mozambique rubies and that in this stone act to scatter light subtly, producing flashes of internal movement without compromising face up clarity. The excellent polish increases contrast between facet planes, tightening the light return cycles and enhancing the perception of a clean, vivid surface. Heat treatment in this instance has been applied to stabilize and intensify the red chroma, a controlled process that reduces the visibility of minute inclusions and brings the internal color to a more homogeneous state, while remaining consistent with trade standards for natural ruby enhancement.

In a custom design context the optical and physical attributes of this ruby inform several complementary gemstone and setting strategies that will accentuate its strengths. For maximum contrast and visual pop, a halo of high color grade round brilliant diamonds in D to F color with small table and tight symmetry will provide a bright white surround that isolates the vivid red, making the ruby read larger and more saturated. For a streamlined, architectural look, tapered baguette diamonds or parallel step cut emeralds as shoulders will create elongated lines that emphasize the round center, while maintaining a refined profile. To exploit color theory, pairing the ruby with green tsavorite garnets or fine emeralds creates a classic complementary contrast, intensifying the red through juxtaposition, while pairing with deep blue sapphires produces a regal tri tone palette when combined with yellow or rose gold accents. Metal choice is a critical variable, because warm gold alloys such as 18 karat yellow or rose gold will deepen the perceived red and harmonize with the stone, whereas platinum or 18 karat white gold will enhance perceived brilliance and create a crisp color contrast. Setting options should respect the stone proportions and faceting, a four or six prong low profile crown will allow light to enter the pavilion and retain the intended balance of color and scintillation, while a slight bezel will protect and slightly mute the luster, useful for jewelry subject to heavy wear. For accent stone sizing, a halo of 1.2 to 1.8 millimeter melee diamonds or a pair of 3 by 1.5 millimeter tapered baguettes will maintain proportional harmony with the 6.9 millimeter diameter of the ruby. The Natural Ruby Company can provide guidance on metal selection, specific accent stone grades, and setting geometry to achieve the desired visual effect, ensuring that the finished piece maximizes the mixed brilliant cut dynamics, vivid Mozambique color, and overall optical performance of this 1.81 carat round ruby.
