This specimen is a transparent 3.28 carat cushion shape purplish red ruby measuring 11.18 by 6.92 by 3.99 mm, it features a mixed brilliant cut with a brilliant faceting pattern on the pavilion and modified step facets on the crown, designed to maximize light return while preserving weight. The mixed brilliant faceting creates a balance of scintillation and face up color, clarity grade included, evaluated at eye level, with characteristic rutile needles and mineral inclusions that act as diagnostic fingerprints confirming natural origin and Mozambique provenance. Color is purplish red with vivid intensity, distributed evenly across the table with minimal zoning visible at standard viewing distances. Excellent polish, facet junctions are sharp and meet with precision, crown angle and pavilion symmetry optimized to achieve an optimum balance between brilliance and color saturation. Heat treated enhancement has been applied as a standard and stable procedure, reducing silk and improving transparency, while preserving the natural chromium based hue and long term stability of the stone.
Formed deep within the Earth under high pressure and temperature conditions over millions of years, this ruby originated as chromium bearing corundum created when aluminum rich metamorphic or igneous protoliths were exposed to metasomatic fluids during regional metamorphism, chromium substituted for aluminum in the corundum lattice imparting the purplish red color. Growth occurred as discrete tabular crystals that later experienced deformation and recrystallization events, trapping rutile needles and mineral inclusions that produce the included clarity grade and contribute to the internal character of the gem. Geological uplift and erosion liberated the crystal from its host, then secondary transport concentrated gem grade material in alluvial deposits in Mozambique. Skilled lapidaries at The Natural Ruby Company analyzed the crystal, oriented it to preserve weight and color, and executed a mixed brilliant cut to enhance face up color and light performance, concluding with an excellent polish to present maximum saturation and brilliance. The result is a transparent, well proportioned 3.28 carat cushion ruby that evidences deep time genesis and meticulous human craftsmanship.
