Product description

The central gemstones in these earrings are oval mixed cut rubies, gemstones of corundum with the chemical composition Al2O3, offering the second highest hardness among commonly worn gems with a Mohs value of 9.00, this intrinsic hardness yields exceptional durability while retaining the capacity for precise faceting. The oval mixed cut combines a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a more complex pavilion schematic, optimizing both color saturation and light return. The stones display a vivid red hue with a medium dark tone and high saturation, characteristics that maximize the eye appeal of corundum by allowing the stone to present rich chroma without appearing overly brown or overly pink. Optical properties integral to corundum such as refractive indices in the range of 1.762 to 1.770, and birefringence on the order of 0.008 to 0.010, contribute to the lively color separation and internal contrast seen when the pieces are viewed from different angles, a pleochroic response that enhances depth in faceted ovals. Inclusions commonly observed in natural rubies, including rutile silk and mineral crystals, act as identifiers of origin and treatment state, while affecting phenomena such as asterism when oriented as cabochons. For faceted stones in this design, clarity has been optimized to allow strong light transmission, with cutting and orientation chosen to minimize the visual impact of necessary inclusions, resulting in uniformly saturated stones that read as a matched, calibrated pair.

Surrounding the central rubies is a scalloped halo composed of well matched round brilliant melee diamonds, set to create a starburst silhouette that visually increases the perceived surface area of the center stones while simultaneously enhancing overall brilliance. The melee are cut to a fine proportion set for pavé presentation, with small table facets and precisely aligned girdle planes to produce even scintillation across the halo. Diamonds contribute optical dispersion and contrast, their high refractive index near 2.417 and high dispersion about 0.044 producing the white light return and spectral flashes that frame and intensify the ruby color through contrast. In this mounting the diamonds have been selected for near colorless appearance and for clarity grades that provide clean, bright halos at eye level, while their matched sizes and consistent facet alignment are critical for the seamless scalloped edge. The microprong or shared prong technique used to hold each melee reduces metal visibility and increases the apparent density of the halo, a technical choice that requires exacting hand setting and secure seat engineering to avoid movement or loss during wear.

The mount is executed entirely in 14K white gold, a choice that balances strength, wearability, and the muted white field needed to isolate and enhance the colored centers. The galleries and basket are open and engineered to maximize light access to the pavilion facets of both ruby and diamond, the openwork ensuring that transmitted light can reenter the stone and contribute to both brilliance and warmth. Fabrication details such as consistent prong geometry, symmetric halo scalloping, and calibrated seat tolerances indicate meticulous benchwork, with final rhodium finishing typically applied to 14K white gold in order to increase reflectivity and maintain the cool tone that contrasts effectively with the ruby red. For collectors and technically minded buyers, these earrings demonstrate calibrated matching of weight and hue between stones, precise facet symmetry in the central oval cuts, and disciplined melee selection and setting to produce uniform scintillation. Routine care recommendations include avoiding harsh chemicals, periodic inspection of prongs and seats by a qualified jeweler, and optional receipt of gemological reporting for the ruby centers if desired, to document natural origin, treatment state, and to confirm the optical and physical parameters that contribute to their exceptional performance in this refined halo presentation.
